Company of Heroes plot inspiration

The other day I mentioned that Modiphius had given all of the Achtung! Cthulhu backers an extra file to aid in the construction of some scenarios.

This morning while prepping some Bolt Action commandos for the painting challenge I watched an inspiring (if ever so cheesy) Company of Heroes on Lovefilm and thought it would make a great plot for a session. If you like Hollywood-esque WW2 where facts and realism take a back seat then it's an enjoyable, pulpy film.

The actual plot revolves around a group of US troops getting caught up on the edge of the Battle of the Bulge and end up lost behind enemy lines just in time to witness the aftermath of the test detonation of a nuclear device at a concentration camp. They soon end up becoming involved in a secret mission to retrieve a defecting German scientist and disrupt the next test, accompanied by a Russian agent and British pilot.

I could see this being a great way to introduce a mixture of players to Section M. You can lead up to the discovery at the camp (whatever it may be) with some introductory run and gun scenarios behind enemy lines to get the characters working together. Once you've had them discover something at the camp you can resume the film's plot and have them encounter a fatally injured Section M agent. They get asked to complete his mission to disrupt Black Sun's plans... depending on what you've had them encounter will determine where you send them next and what you have them do. One thing to keep in mind is that whatever happened at the camp must have gone wrong, otherwise there would not be any need to rush off to stop a horrible event, so think carefully.

  1. That sounds like an interesting film! At first, I thought you're gonna talk about the game! :P

  2. Apparently the film is loosely tied to the game's IP... but I'll be damned if I can see how, other than it being WW2 ;)
