While most people take the themes and try to create one piece of terrain like a building, I've been trying to take the theme and convert it into a new set of tiles to add. The last one ended up in the swamps, even though it started as a book/reading spot related thing. If you go back to the first tile for the swamps a few posts ago you can see the books all piled up by someone.

This time the theme is Crossings, so I've chosen the obvious of a river crossing or two. This necessitates the creation of an entire river for the table too as I don't have one of those yet! The first trial was just a flat tile with the river painted onto it... but it just felt like a real copout in terms of opportunities, so I manufactured a new tile type with two raised sides, allowing for the creation of some banked river tiles

Above, you can see one half of the low tide gravelly path across the river. It looks/feels a little bit too high though. I should probably have just painted it underneath the river instead of trying to gravel the whole thing... ah well! There will be a few more layers of different blues over this, followed by some modpodge for a bit of texture and shine.

The finished version along with the bridge and about another 12 river tiles (possibly more, I forget...) will be shown later as they are also going into the Analogue Hobbies challenge
Endtransmissionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11668764504686502861noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6603057587595070497.post-73003898304347176552022-01-09T18:00:00.001+00:002022-01-09T18:00:00.179+00:00Stormcast Eternals
Kicking off this year's painting challenge are some of the Stormcast from the recent Age of Sigmar starter set. These are much much nicer proportions than the original design... they look a lot more realistic. They still came with the daft death masks though, so I've been replacing them all with sallet heads from the Reptilian Overlords mercs set, which I think give them a much nicer silhouette

Endtransmissionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11668764504686502861noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6603057587595070497.post-70419710052859268692022-01-06T21:38:00.002+00:002022-01-06T21:38:20.186+00:00The webways open...
I swore I wasn't going to do any more 40k after painting a guard army last year where every. single. squad. was *EXACTLY THE SAME*. It *looks* great, but it was painful to paint. For 2022 my brain has decided that it'd be a *brilliant* idea to convert up a Ynnari army so I can collect/convert bits from the three Eldar armies and buy the shiny new bits when they come out. Thanks brain. Thanks a bunch... you know I don't actually play 40k so why the hell do I need/want to buy another army I'll never use?!

Oh Kill Team you say?

So one order later I seem to be making lots of neat conversions. I'm trying not to think how much it's costing but it looks pretty so far! For those that missed them, a while back the Eldar managed to waken up their god of the dead, who now protects it's worshippers from having their souls eaten by Slaanesh when they die. This has caused a schism and now a 4th eldar faction exists (Ynnari) that can use a lot of the unit choices from all of the other eldar armies.

The first Kabalite squad being constructed is going to be a Trueborn one, a bunch of natural born dark eldar who think they are better than everyone else... of course they need to look posher than anyone else. So what better than the bird masks from the Scourges, cloaks from the old Warhammer Shadow Warriors and a greenstuff fur collar to match the Visarch model from the very very small Ynnari range. They have been de-spiked to give them a sleeker look that sits somewhere between the smooth Craftworld armour and the spiky Dark Eldar stuff

After playing around with him a bit, I moved onto the really nice Inkubi kit, which is really nice but also too spikey for the theme. They come with massive skull helmets, which feel a bit ott in a force that is moving away from the torture/pain/slavery thing of the Dark Eldar and more towards decadence. Using the Kabalite helmets here makes them fit with the Visarch as his bodyguards. It feels like they also need to have some fur and cloaks on somewhere.

They are supposed to have big spikey back decoration. I've left this on the boss, but want to add back banners to everyone else instead. This *may* get expensive though as you only get one of these per Kabalite box... and I really don't need that many basic grunts; especially not for Kill Team! I may need to take that one off and make an alternative, but at least I can see the concept.

Then there are the Wyches. The Visarch (who I will buy/paint at some point soon) has some ornate armour with plenty of decoration on the knees, so for the wych cult it made sense to use the Idoneth Deepkin archers as they have some really nice lower armour, very dynamic poses (who thought archers bouncing all over the place was a good concept?), but have bare chests which fits with the wych/pit fighter concept. The Wych arms fit really nicely, but the heads need a bit of trimming to work, but in the end look pretty good.

Endtransmissionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11668764504686502861noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6603057587595070497.post-42036979157932601112021-12-15T19:58:00.001+00:002021-12-15T19:58:05.969+00:00Slacker reporting for duty!
Well *that* didn't go as planned! I blink and it is suddenly December 2021... 18 months since the last post here. I blame lockdown as it only seems like yesterday since I last posted! It seems I not only missed posting last year's AHPC stuff... but all of the work done on the modular gaming table, an Age of Sigmar Flesh Eater Court *and* a vampire counts army! I have some catchup posts to do I think!

At present I'm prepping for this year's AHPC, so there's a bit of backlog clearance to do before that starts... as well as prepping anything I want to actually paint!

So what is the main change over the last 18 months? Well things have moved on quite a bit since then. I invested in an Ender 3 to go with the resin printer, which means I have the capacity to print larger, or lower quality, things... leaving the resin printer to deal with figures rather than terrain. Remember those foam hexes that I was making last time? They are no more*, they have been replaced by a combination of printed hex plates and some risers. These were based on a concept another company did with Openlock connectors, but each hex used significantly more filament and took quite a few hours to print. With these very basic ones I can print 4 risers in the time it would take to print 1 of the others. These are also scaled to match the foam hexes that I already have.

This makes storage a lot easier, as well as simplifying swapping hexes around as I can leave the risers in place and just swap around the top bits. This has meant that I've disassembled some of the foam from 2020 and rebased them, though there's still all the trees to work on. There's a little bit of tidying up that I need to do, then they will be going onto Thingiverse. It's not full terrain like Hexhogs' mountains/cliffs (more of which later), but encourages terrain building instead. For grasslands I've been using Vallejo textured earth paste

Larger buildings or set pieces are going on merged tiles, allowing a bit more scale to be added

Likewise, it's easy to create new details to completely change the scope of a layout. In this case a set of railway line tiled means a fantasy village becomes a pulp countryside setting instead. For the railway I also printed a resized crater from Hexhogs and added some railway lines to allow for some demolition scenarios to be done with a simple swap when the bomb goes *BOOM!*

Dakka Dakka had a terrain challenge, with the theme of books so I made a little swampy reading spot using some bits and pieces of plastic terrain and coffee stirers. I need to go back and fix both parts at some point, but I've sorta lost interest in that one.

Aaaanyway. I have done some more bits and pieces to go around the table though
To get a bit more shape to the table, I cut a bunch more hill sections. I'm slowly getting to grips with cutting these things and only worrying about the edges cut to the right level neatly and hacking the rest in to allow for some variation in shape/curvature once the polyfilla goes on

The woodlands got some nice extensions too. These are the last two Citadel wood trees that I own now built, so I had to go searching for some alternatives. The joy of a 3d printer is there are a few decent alternatives out there. The ones I settled on were the Winterdale Gnarly trees from Printablescenery.com. They look pretty good, but not quite up to the same standard as the old GW plastics. Still, $9 for the file and about £1.20 per tree in resin and more variation is pretty good value for a bit of a quality drop. The added bonus is I've also printed out a bunch at 10mm for a different (new) project that will get it's own post at some point

The bushes are from the free sample pack on the Lost Adventures kickstarter page and the free Black Carrot Designs tree stump on Thingiverse. The fun of 3d printing is the ability to merge models to provide some variety, which you can see from the bushes merged into the treestump. I also added a little rabbit hiding in the bush, to see if anyone is paying attention while playing on the table ;)

There are also some squirrels and a magpie hidden in the trees if you look carefully.
The last addition doesn't really fit the more fantasy theme, but will be a fun objective in more weird war/pulp games. I had the shelter for a while all painted up, but kept forgetting it existed... so it is now part of the table.
A few years back when I was on a resin casting kick, I tried sculpting/casting an extra wall to go with the GW Garden of Morr set as I loved the style... but hated all the skulls on it all. That didn't go so well as the plaster started to disinegrate in the wet rubber.

Roll forward a few years and I've not only managed to create some straight walls that fit nicely, but I've managed to create a full set of walls for the table and I'm over the moon with how well they have come out. The set also includes a small gateway, like the Secret Garden and a collapsed section... but also includes a lychgate. It is for a cemetary after all.

Given that these are my first ever 3d models, I was a little wary of doing anything with them, but I was finally convinced the other day to let others have them as well. It's not like I've got enough of a following to try and sell them yet... so they are now available for free on https://www.myminifactory.com/users/MrMagpieCreates.

Future models will also be added there too. Enjoy! and if you print them, please let me know, I'd love to see them in use!Endtransmissionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11668764504686502861noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6603057587595070497.post-49392579460794037462020-05-19T16:00:00.000+01:002020-05-19T16:00:07.185+01:00Patreon recommendationsLast Christmas I bought myself an Elegoo Mars resin 3d printer. One thing that has been great is all the interesting Patreons and kickstarters that are starting to appear now the technology is well within homebudget range. This is certainly going to impact the way the hobby evolves over the coming years.

At present most things seem to be around fantasy or sci-fi figures and terrain, but I would not be surprised to see historicals and pulp start to make an appearance soon and start challenging some of the more established companies. Having to buy one set of files for not very much at all... and then be able to print out a many of them as you need... *mind blown*. May are starting to provide pre-supported models too, which takes all the work out of it... just load up the slicer with the bits you want, hit save and print. No more faffing with carefully placing struts on it all.

Some of my favourite Patreon creators at the moment are:

Cult Miniatures. These guys are creating very modular kits that allow real flexibility in positioning and customisation. Below you cna see all the options for *one* of the figures in this month's set. Each month they release one standard size infantry unit, one larger unit, at least one character and something else. Last month was egyptian undead (or Khemri to those of you from WFB), which came with a load ot terrain elements. The previous month was Beastmen, so in addition to the normal two units we got a unit of minotaurs. All for $12 a month... Below you can see the modularity of this month's fungus queen. I have 7TV ideas for her

Lost Kingdom Miniatures are hard at work creating some stunning alternatives to WFB classics. Their primary focus so far has been Chaos Dwarves and Lizardmen, with the occasional diversion into heroes for other races... so who knows what will be coming in the future. They recently did a highly successful kickstarter for terrain for these two races with some very characterful figures. Sadly I didn't back this one as I don't need any of the terrain and to get the two or three interesting exclusive figures you had to go all in. This one is useful for filling in some slots in the Warhammer Quest lineup. This month is some skink and kroxigor alternatives that are far far nicer than the originals... not bad for $10

The last one for today is Artisan Guild. In terms of modularity, these guys are slightly less modular than Cult miniatures, but far more flexible than Lost Kingdoms. AG tend to just make the hands separate and create batches with lots of different weapon combinations. They even supply open and closed hands and weapons with no hands... so 5 minutes in Blender means you can start mixing and matching weapons or accessories from other sets very easily. Fancy an elf with black powder weapons? Fine. Take the blunderbus form the Dwarf set and put it into someone else's hands. Some races even share the same hands so it is even easier. The models are a bit chunkier than other ranges though, but that's ok too. Just scale the model down by 10% and it'll now fit with most other ranges. Again, this one is only $10 a month.
I know I say this every year... but *this* time... *this* time. I hope everyone is keeping safe at the moment!

I did start a Warhammer Quest blog over on my home domain, but that derailed slightly as I got distracted by 7TV... at some point it'll get resurrected when interests switch back to that I'm sure.

Not much painting has happened over the last year, but for the key bits I'll go back and add them in the next week or so. These are mainly the two casts taken to the Board in Brum's 7TV days that seem to have become my primary gaming outlet of late. But more on those later!

Lockdown has given me a good chance to actually get back to building my modular gaming table. I finished just enough of it to take to the last 7TV day and it seemed to go down well with lots of ideas thrown around for additions. This is what people got to play over at the time and went with my cast of scarecrows; the edge of Winterly with the windmill, blacksmith and the millers house

The buildings are all 4Ground, with the old GW woods fitting in really well as the creepy trees in this haunted village. Sadly they are no longer produced and are not cheap on eBay... if anyone comes across any spares that they want to get rid of, let me know as I'd love to have even more! and a village pond. The pond is still awaiting some ducks and flowers to arrive to make it look a little less sparse, but it is the first experiment with water effects on the board. Some murkiness was added with some Vallejo slime effect in the lower layers. I forgot to paint the bottom a much darker colour though, so it's a very shallow pond...
The board has it's own thread on https://leadadventureforum.com/ but I intend to keep figure posts over here as well as other experiments
After the rust experiments the other week on the barriers and crates, it was time to try and tackle some more terrain for Necromunda. I've seen many tutorials using salt recently picked up some of the AK Interactive chipping liquid and wanted to see how that worked as, in theory, it should make life a bit easier than a bit of sponge but works best with an airbrush as it means less work to get it off.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">I've had an airbrush for years, but never really had anywhere to set it up and play. Today I finally managed to unpack it and have a play. This is a bit of a teaser for a future Challenge entry, so the final steps won't be shown in this post, but will come as a part 2 after it is done.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">

The wall was initially undercoated black and then a rusty colour was sprayed over the top in a patchy way using some car undercoats, to give it a slightly mottled base layer. Over the rusty red areas I sprayed some of the chipping effect so that as the next few layers are pulled back, you'll start to see a rusty chip colour

Across the bottom two thirds, I put a layer of pale green. I think it is a tank interior, I can't remember from the sofa. Whatever it was, it has taken nearly an entire bottle of the paint to do all of the walls! Do airbrushes really churn through paint really quickly? There are a lot of walls, so I guess it is fair enough.

Across the top half I went for a much lighter grey so it looks like the walls were originally pale grey and have slowly been covered up in grime.

Now the colours are on, it was just a case of taking a toothbrush, a little bit of water and scrubbing the wall a bit to reveal the rusty basecoat colour. As you can see, it can be worn of gently, or large chips.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">It looks good enough to call done, but I want to dirty it up even more. You could just as easily replace the airbrush with some other cans of spray paint. I suspect you'll want model spray, rather than car spray as I'm not convinced that water would break up the car undercoat to give you the chipped effect.

The walls come from a great company called Blotz and are well worth adding to your Necromunda collection as it really adds to the atmosphere. Here are a couple of extra shots after they have been rusted up a bit with the last dregs of my Modelmates rust. Now I really do need to invest in a bottle of that other liquid and pray it really is the same stuff.

I seem to have found a way of blitzing space marines in a way that, to me, is easy and quick. The greys on all of these were done in one 2 hour session with one of the large terrain drybrushes that GW sells. Turns out you can get some great control with one of those and churn out some nice looking armour. Next time I have to paint some Marines, which should be in a few weeks time when the next batch of Conquest arrives, I'll try and remember to do some stage by stage photos.

Some transfers have arrived for the shoulder pads, but I need to test them out as reports are not good. Apparently they are thick and don't take well to the curvature of the pads. I didn't fancy ruining these guys just in time to submit them for the AHPC.

Starting the ball rolling in this set of reinforcements we have a Primaris captain in Gravis armour from the starter set. Another should be along at some point, so I can play around with poses and equipment later. One day I should have a read of the actual army lists to find out what they can take, rather than going with what looks nice as I have no idea how these all play!

The original batch of standard Primaris are boulstered by another 10. A number of these are the easy builds that came with Conquest. Issue one was 3 of these, plus a brush and 2 pots of paint for £2. It would have been rude not to buy extra copies to bulk out the force. You'll notice that throughout the force, all of the baseline infantry have their heads covered. Bare heads with power armour just seems like a dumb idea to me, so one in three of those figures are not being used as they have a helmet stuck to their leg. Once day I may have a go at cutting it off.

For a bit of fast attack we have 4 of the easy build Inceptors. Two more of these should turn up throughout the course of the Conquest series, eventually giving me two squads of these guys. I was tempted to try and buy some spare arms from ebay to make them a bit different, or add other weapon options, but at this point two squads with the assault bolters seems pretty good. The OSL on these was done with some light dry brushing of the blues and was surprisingly quick and effective.

Recently the series added a squad of easy build aggressors to the army and the models are really really nice. I know a lot of people moan about these easy to build figures, but some of the monopose models are much nicer than the multipart kits as they can ensure that the pieces interlock properly and give a nice dynamic feel. These I really like as they still seem to be able to move in their chunky armour, unlike most of the old plastic Terminators (not counting the relatively recent Space Hulk ones)

These 5 Reavers were from the Kill Team box as the onesfrom before Christmas were the easy-builds with pistols and knives. By getting this kit, I've now got some different pistol/knife arm combos to use on the second batch of easy builds to round out that squad with some unique poses for two 5 man squads. If I ever want to bulk these out to 10 men each, I just need one retail box of Reavers

I had a Contemptor dreadnought kicking around from the Horus Heresy board games, so I decided to add him to the lineup as well. As this was the plastic Contemptor, the pose was a bit naff, so a bit of hacking later and he is now striding forward and twisting at the waist to look a little bit more dynamic than the very static pose they decided to go for.

For now I only have a couple of extra figures left to complete for the army. I've not put the finishing touches to them yet as they were started before the painting challenge. I really should rectify that, even if it doesn't get me any extra points. This is the full crowd to date, including the bits from late last year. Not too shabby.

AK Vs ModelMatesDuring this year's Analogue Hobbies challenge I have a lot of weathering that I need to do on Necromunda terrain and Nurgle marines. Can't have the underhive or Death Guard go un-rusted... it just wouldn't be right.

In the past I've used ModelMates rust effect and love it, but I'm running short of it and can't find any replacements online as it looks like they have closed. Quite a while ago apparently. I've used AK's slimy grime liquid to good effect before, so I thought I'd have a go with their Crusted Rust Deposits set as, not only is AK easy to get hold of, but they have a great reputation in scale model circles.

So, the challengers.

As you can see, three large pots vs one much smaller one. Surely the AK stuff will look much more effective, right?

The Crusted Rust set requires three progressive applications to get an interesting patina, starting with the dark deposits (that isn't really that dark) and working your way up to the light rust level in much smaller quantities where you want some newer rust. Kinda tricky to get something that looks ok.

The old Modelmates? One coat slapped/stippled on and just left to do its thing over a few minutes while it dries. Simples, to quote some meerkats.

On the left we have ModelMates. On the right we have the AK stuff after a few attempts.

For simplicity sake, Modelmates would be my go-to choice for rust, if they still existed. The AK set was a bit too fiddly to get looking half way decent and, for the gaming table, is a bit too subtle. The dark and medium ones will be useful for dirtying things up a bit, but the light really looks wrong in terms of how bright it is.

A bit of digging on the internet seems to imply that the Modelmates rust effect is the same as Dirty Down's Rust effect for movie props, which means it comes in much much bigger pots, so you can get twice as much for the same price as the original ModelMates pots from the likes of ModelShop.co.uk

I may have a go at using the two together to see what can be done on larger surfaces...Endtransmissionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11668764504686502861noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6603057587595070497.post-54828134995578127472018-12-22T21:54:00.000+00:002018-12-22T21:54:08.353+00:00Cult mining bot for Necromunda

Recently some friends and I have been attempting to play a Necromunda campaign. The going is quite slow as we're all rather busy. I've gone for my ever favourite Genestealer Cult, even though it doesn't have quite as much support as the primary 6. Having said that, it is giving me time to work on my cult force between games and piece together any new acquisitions and some sneaky plans are forming, thanks to some great territory acquisitions.

After a very successful (scarily so) spook harvesting session in my second game of the campaign I ended up rolling in cash with enough reputation points to go hire me a little buddy in the form of an Ambot. Ambots are mining bots, which fits nicely with the cult's mining theme. I took one of the Forgeworld bots as a base and decided to make it more like a purestrain as, for some reason, we can't have one in the cult yet. I can't wait to see the look on my opponent's face when this thing infiltrates at the start of the game... along with half my gang coming up through the Tunnels... and then seeing them all go first thanks to the Toll Booth

Now I just need to grow the gang enough to get more aberrants to appear from the Tunnels, rather than rifle toting cultists

After a bit of debating, I went along to give it a try, fully expecting to only get a chance for one or two turns. In the end, I managed to join a 4 crew game and experience the whole glorious thing, end to end.

Core Space feels like Firefly with robots instead of Reavers. Each player commands 3 crew members of separate "trader" crews. Each crew enters from their ship and has to compete for the goal, while fending off ever growing numbers of robots, patrolling police enforcers and the occasional civilian. The photos below are all on the game boards using 3d prints of the figures; the production ones have even more detail. Our game was quite tense all the way through. It started off with a nice simple objective of collecting two pieces of McGuffin to release the lockdown on all the ships and we could have just found two between the 4 crews, but once they had been gathered... things went sideways.

By this point we had gathered quite a lot of enemies on the board as well.
I'm quite pleased with the OSL on these two Hellblasters. Hopefully I can remember how I achieved it when I get around to the rest of them :/
This objective marker/Teleport homer is from the Deathwatch board game. It has been sat on the table for ages and just needed the lights painting, so it made sense to finish it off at the same time.
Some of them feed into the challenge, some don't... but all of them need to be finished in order to safely start something new on the 20th. If I don't, they will never get finished!

This first batch are the start of a Red Scorpions Primaris force. I used to have a Forge World Red Scorpions force years ago, but sold it when my gaming buddy moved away as there wasn't really any use for it. Over the last year I seem to have picked up a number of Space Marines again, thanks to the starter box and the magazine that is currently ongoing. I figured it was about time to put paint to figures and see where it goes... even if it is straight into the sale pile once they are all painted.

The main issue with Red Scorpions is that FW stopped doing their transfer sheet, so the choice was either a third party transfer sheet, or hand paint logos on every single figure... After one or two failed attempts? I'm waiting for some transfers. On one, that's fine. On two... not a hope in hell.

The first batch finished is a squad of 5 Intercessors
Spectacularly. As did the intention to try and keep this thing updated... or do any painting. Some bits have been painted and lots of 4ground buildings have been stuck together... but the weather has pretty much sucked the will out of me recently. I will eventually get something finished enough to post photos. Eventually.
I did do some writing for WFRP, but always ended back at the same point where I wanted to do some stats. Without the new book, this always came to a dead end as I didn't want to write anything for earlier versions and have to redo it again for 4th edition. Thankfully last night saw the initial preview release to preorder folk and it is glorious. The book is still missing things like an index, page numbers for references and some maps, but even without these... great work.

I'm loving the artwork and layout of this thing. It still has that WFRP feel, but with much nicer typography than earlier editions. We also still have the small but vicious dog for the Rat Catcher career. Wouldn't be WFRP without it really.

I've not had much chance to read it all yet, but the bits I have had a look at all seem to be well structured, with clear callouts to alternate rules, clarifications or examples when they are needed. The Facebook groups all seem to (with one or two people as an exception) be liking the updates to the rules as well, so that is a good thing.

The bestiary section is nicely done, though the stats blocks being kind of small with only a few key examples per race, screams that there will be a proper bestiary book sometime later. There is a nice little section about making quick NPCs from anything in the bestiary, which also includes the core player races. Conversely there are also some brief notes on using the bestiary to create alternate character races until new ones are released.
This morning's discovery is Tuomas Pirinen, the author of one of my favourite games/settings.... Mordheim.

His facebook is full of nostalgic bits, such as scans of original artwork for the game and snippets of background that he has written since as he seems to be an active member of the Mordheim facebook group too, which is cool. I remember losing vast amounts of time to the original Yahoo group from the original WD teasers of the background/artwork and even managed to get some bits into the magazine. It is really tempting to try and convert some of this stuff into WFRP articles.

My favourite piece on his page is an article for a new warband he was working on a while back that includes some more info on the fall of the city: https://www.facebook.com/DesignbyTuomasPirinen/posts/1790486687866421
I mentioned a few posts back that I was going to be teaching some friends how to roleplay . That day was yesterday and involved some mad panics in the runup as I couldn't decide if I should go for WFRP 2nd edition (for easier transition to 4th in a month or two if they like it), or 3rd because I own most of it, but have never had a chance to see if it is actually any good if you look past all the mandatory cards and tokens.

In the end I decided that I'd spent time reading 2nd, so I should really stick to that and not have any last minute changes... I was in enough trouble as it was. Turns out all the panicking was for nothing though as everyone enjoyed the game. I'd settled on running the starter adventure Through the Drakwald, with a few tweaks. The original version sets it just after the Storm of Chaos campaign in the Old World, but as I sort of want to shift them over to the AoS universe, I moved the events to be at the start of the new Malign Portents campaign, where the dead are rising in insane quantities and marching on everyone. I left the locations the same as, who knows... someone may inadvertently call their new town Middenheim after something in the holy texts of Sigmar. The main change was swapping the initial mutant attack and the goblin attack into zombies instead. Given that we normally play zombie games anyway, it seemed thematically suitable for them all too.

In the opening scenes of the adventure, there is a rumour that the local priest has a holy relic. In typical player fashion, rather than following the main plotline that was being carefully guided by a crowd of people demanding to leave the area due to an oncoming horde of zombies... they were trying to think of various ways to get this thing off the priest and find out what it was... including (but not limited to) mugging him, putting him to sleep with magic and kidnapping. Thankfully one of the players had done roleplaying before and he managed to get things back on track without resorting to outright murder (which was also an option being thrown around by the dwarf mercenary!). The expert marksman in the group was obviously drunk as he missed every single shot he made during the game, but passed every conversation test required... so I think we'll need to swap him over to be an academic type... for the safety of the local rabbit population.

Pretty sure I didn't follow the rules at all, but hey. They enjoyed it and, after a while, so did I. They all seem keen on trying again, so I guess I need to get planning so that when 4th edition comes out and work calms down a bit, we can try again. This time I need to work out what spells a starting mage actually gets, rather than giving her all the Petty magic (Arcane) spells from the beginning

These mdf tools make it easy to create a modular table, which for me is a godsend as I'm fickle and get really bored of the same layout all the time.

While it looks great, it was taking forever to cut out all the hexes for this little section, which isn't even 1/8th of my gaming table surface... plus I've not even started on hills, rivers, cliffs and the riser blocks needed to make the different levels of the table. One of the main challenges for this is getting the two layers of the template lined up correctly. As you can see from the current tiles, there are some gaps and misalignments that have come about due to the two sides being a little bit twisted.

In a mad flash of inspiration and a call to foam cutting service, I now have a *huge* box of machine cut hexes :D
Amusingly, this came just after the announcement that Cubicle7's new edition comes out in June at UK Games Expo.

Sadly this is a few weeks after Dec's birthday, so I'm going to have to start an intro session with 2nd edition. If things go well and there are requests for more sessions, I'll try and switch to the new one. My only sadness is that there still isn't a release date (or in fact any news) for the Age of Sigmar rpg set yet as this would have been my preference. I was a big disappointed when the Old World got blown up, but the more I read the AoS books the more I'm enjoying the fresh start to Warhammer and all the crazy stuff they are coming out with. Cities on the back of giant worms; blind, underwater elves with giant turtles and dwarves in flying ships... it is going more and more Moorecock with each release. While we wait for that book to drop, I'm going to try updating some of the Old World adventures to be set in the new Realms.

The plus side to this is that I get to spend my evenings in hotels at the moment doing a bit of writing towards this.Endtransmissionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11668764504686502861noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6603057587595070497.post-51546238874469217992018-04-15T13:24:00.002+01:002018-04-15T13:24:42.560+01:00Resuming bloggingIt I about time I started writing stuff down. Sadly I missed the last few weeks of the APC this year and dropped in the rankings. I had grand plans to finish lots of different projects, but in the end got sidetracked with a number of new clients at work that required travel. Thankfully I did manage to close off a couple of projects and start the long awaited terrain project. The full gallery of bits and pieces can be found on my Google Photos.

The plus side to this year is that I have already achieved two of my secret goals. The first was to get one of my figures up on the GW main site. You can still see it there along side the official Great Unclean One images :D
The second was to actually enter a painting competition in my local GW. Just after the end of APC they ran a competition where everyone had to paint the special edition terminator captain. I was the only one that did any updates to the figure, by including the Deathwatch pad and icon on the Iron Halo.
I'm very pleased to say that he came in second place, much to the slight disgust (I'm sure) of all the regulars as I only ever go in to buy paint and leave straight away. They must have been "Who is this guy and why is he entering our competition?!" The guy who came in first had done some very very smooth transitions on the armour and some freehand iconography, so I'm not surprised he came in first. People did assume the shoulder pad on mine was a transfer though, which is a nice compliment. I wasn't convinced the red circle was quite good enough, which is why there are scratches and chips all over it.

Next self-challenge is to enter more of the local competitions and improve the smoothness of the painting a bit more.
